Belgrade goes for EU membership

Today, Serbian President Boris Tadić will fly to Stockholm to officially submit his country's application for membership of the European Union—a milestone perceived as an acknowledgement of progress that has been accomplished since the fall of the Milošević regime in 2000. Quoting Sweden's ambassador to Belgrade, Krister Bringeus, who remarks on the Swedish Presidency of the EU's "delight at the new application," Politikanotes that Serbian accession will remain contingent on legal and anti-corruption reforms as well as cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
