People of Freedom party leader Silvio Berlusconi will withdraw his support for the coalition government led by Enrico Letta’s Democratic Party before a September 9 Senate Committee for Immunity and Elections meeting to decide if the former PM’s fraud conviction means he will lose his seat in the upper house, writes La Repubblica.
The decision by Il Cavaliere, who was last month sentenced to four years in jail and banned from holding public office after being found guilty of tax fraud, may topple the fragile coalition.
Should the government fall, “elections could be held as early as November 24 and 25,” continues La Repubblica.
