The Senate voted to strip Silvio Berlusconi of his senator’s seat on November 27 following his conviction for tax fraud in August, reports La Stampa.
Speaking to supporters at the time of the vote, Il Cavaliere declared that it was “a day of mourning” for democracy, and vowed that he would continue “to fight for democracy” outside parliament, adds the daily.
Now that he no longer benefits from parliamentary immunity, the former prime minister may be arrested in connection with any of the ongoing prosecutions and investigations he faces, including his conviction for paying minors for sex, a trial in which he is alleged to have bribed a senator and another where he is accused of bribing a witness.
