The UK is Europe’s crime capital, clamours the Daily Telegraph. Analysis of figures from the European Commission show a 77% increase in murders, robberies, assaults and sexual offences since 1998 - the year, the London daily reminds its conservative readership, "Labour came to power". The British, for instance, commited more murders in 2007 than any other EU country – 927. Statistics also reveal that at 2,000, the Britain’s violent crime rate per 100,000 population is well ahead of reputedly placid Sweden and the Netherlands, and even the US (466). The Telegraph doesn’t neglect to mention, however, that for researchers comparisons of crime data between countries must be viewed with caution "because of differing criminal justice systems and how crimes are reported and measured".
