On its front page, Trouw reports on “the march for civilisation” — a demonstration organised to protest against 200 millions euros of cuts in the cultural sector, which was attended by 2,000 to 3,500 artists and culture lovers, and supported by museums, theatre companies and orchestras. The 25km-long night march began on 26 June in front of Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, finishing at 3am.

“Participants in the march called on all concerned Dutch citizens to join them,” explains the daily, which adds that the protesters will be organising another demonstration outside the lower house of the Dutch parliament in The Hague, timed to coincide with the debate on the details of the austerity package. The measures in the package, which are designed to promote a more commercial approach to management in the cultural sector, will also penalise institutions that fail to achieve “international stature.”
