‘Emigration close to a record. Those people will never return’

According to data published by Central Statistical Office as many as 70,000 Poles left the country in 2013 and remained abroad for more than three months, headlines Rzeczpospolita.
All in all, the number of Poles living abroad has increased over the last 12 years from 1,41 to 2,2m. The most popular destinations among Polish emigrants include Germany, the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands. According to Prof. Krystyna Iglicka, a demograph and economist quoted by the daily –

It is shocking. A country which thoughtlessly discards so many, mostly young people is losing a lot.

The daily adds that reasons why Poles emigrate have not changed for years and include “unemployment, low salaries and lack of perspectives”.
