Just before the September 5 opening of the two-day G20 summit in St Petersburg, which is officially to discuss the financial crisis but where Syria has now taken centre stage, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy gave a lecture at the city's European University in which he called on Russia to join in the drive to find a diplomatic solution to the Syrian issue.
