The European Pact on Migration and Asylum, adopted by the EU Council in May 2024, came into force on 12 June. Intended to streamline migration rules, the text is described by some human-rights advocates as a breach of individual freedoms. In particular, it authorizes the construction of detention centres outside Europe's borders.
So what are the concrete changes this new agreement will bring? How will EU countries interpret the measures, and who will be affected? What impact will all this have on European democracy? Who is opposed to it? We've discussed these questions and more with Lola García-Ajofrín, Daniela Ioniță, and Silvia Carta.
