Facebook and Google frequently provide Portuguese police with personal details from people using email, YouTube or social networking accounts, writes Diário de Notícias.
Portugal one of 71 countries which routinely requests this data from Internet firms. Facebook received 25,000 requests for information from states around the world on approximately 38,000 users in the first six months of 2013, according to data released on August 27 by Facebook in its first report on the subject "Global Government Requests Report".
The newspaper highlights some of the countries which made the largest number of requests: Portugal 213, Spain 479, France 1,547, the UK 1,975, Germany 1,886 and Greece 122. The US made the largest number of requests, more than 11,000 during this six-month period.
