Speaking to the press on September 26, the leader of Golden Dawn, Nikos Michaloliakos said he would neither exclude or confirm a possible mass resignation of the 18 MPs of his party in protest over the investigation of the far right movement, which he argues is politically motivated.
In the event of a Golden Dawn exit from parliament, notes I Kathimerini, “the government will be faced with a complex problem” at a time when the country is entering “a crucial phase in negotiations on its debt” and preparing to take over the rotating presidency of the EU in January of next year.
Even though the government will not be obliged to organise a general election, it will have to contend with the prospect that the ensuing by-elections will enable Golden Dawn and the radical left-wing coalition, SYRIZA, to confirm their 2012 scores and gain further ground, explains the daily.
