Prime Minister Boïko Borissov resigned on February 20. "Every drop of blood shed is a blemish on us," he said referring to violent clashes a day earlier between demonstrators and police forces.
Protests against the rise in electricity prices, some of them violent, have shaken the country for the past ten days.
Borissov's resignation is a strategic ploy, say some observers, to secure his chances of winning upcoming legislative elections. Scheduled for July, they should be called earlier, probably this spring. In the meantime, a care-taker government will expedite current business.
