During the NATO summit in Newport, UK, Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko said he was “cautiously optimistic” about a ceasefire with separatist pro-Russian militas in Eastern Ukraine. “The contact group on the situation in the Donbass region is to be held today in Minsk (Belarus)”, reports Nezavissimaya Gazeta, according to which Porochenko declared that “if there is an agreement on a peace plan, he will order a ceasefire”. Otherwise, “he will declare martial law”.
The Russian daily however notes that —
it appeared yesterday that both parties have a different vision of the ways to achieve peace. Moscow and Kiev have presented two different plans. In this situations it is unlikely that Minsk discussions will be a breakthrough.
