With 29.5 per cent of the vote, the Social Democrats led by Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt avoided a long-predicted catastrophe in Danish local elections on November 19, reports Politiken.

For the daily, “the main winner in the contest was the far left Red-Green Alliance,” which increased its score from 2.3 per cent in 2009 to 6.9 per cent. The liberals of Venstre, the country’s second largest party, obtained 26.6 per cent, an increase of 1.8 per cent over their previous score.”

The Social Democrats managed to keep their grip on the country’s main cities (Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg). However, the populist Danish People’s Party won its first ever town hall in one of the boroughs of the capital. The turnout at the polls was higher than it was in 2009, up from 65.8 per cent to 71.9 per cent.
