Two weeks ahead of the NATO summit in Newport it is clear "there will be no NATO bases in Poland", writes Rzeczpospolita. According to the Warsaw daily, the alliance “doesn’t want to irk Russia” with permanent military bases by Vistula river.
The Polish defense minister Tomasz Siemoniak hinted that NATO would rather opt for a series of exercises with the participation of Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian troops as well as extension of the military infrastructure and depots that could be used for “fast deployment” of NATO aid in case of war.
Poland and Baltic countries have been particularly anxious about the ongoing conflict between Kiev and Moscow over Eastern Ukraine. Chief Polish diplomat Radosław Sikorski recently said “he would be happy if two NATO heavy brigades were deployed in Poland”.
