In a 23 June decision the Spanish Supreme Court has ruled that the image of a topless public figure, if the latter happens to be, say, a beauty queen or fashion model, is of “interest per se” and “may be news of interest” to “frivolous, entertainment and show business” media, reports El Periódico de Catalunya. The court thus found for the magazine [Interviú](http://www.interviu.es/), which had been ordered by the court of first instance to pay €30,000 in damages to María Reyes, Miss Spain 1995, for publishing snapshots of her topless on an Ibiza beach. “Public figures who expose themselves to the gaze of others in a public place have to expect images of themselves to be captured and disseminated without their consent” – provided the images fall within the scope delimited by the court.
