On a day (29 May) when Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus signed up for the creation of a Eurasian Economic Union, the European Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Füle announced that he was in favour of the future accession of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to the EU. “If we really want to transform the countries of Eastern Europe, we must seriously consider using the most powerful tool at our disposal, and that is enlargement”, he declared to Die Welt.
The commissioner pointed out that enlargement could be accompanied by “greater integration” for some countries, and that it does not exclude the possibility of a multi-speed union.
Ukraine is keen to sign a free trade deal with the EU in early June, reports for its part EUobserver.
