During their televised duel on September 1, the sitting Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and her rival, the Social Democrat Peer Steinbrueck, spent only 12 of the 90 minutes of the debate discussing Greece, according to I Kathimerini's calculations.
"Without a shred of regret, Merkel insisted that the treatment she and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble had inflicted on Greece – austerity, structural reforms and, perhaps, a new bailout" – were fair. As for Steinbrück, he proposed a "Marshall Plan-type solution," the paper notes, adding "the debate answered the eternal question of who exactly governs" Greece.
