“Manuel Jarmela Palos, director of the Foreigner and Border Service, and António Figueiredo, president of the Registry and Notary Institute, were arrested on 12 November in an investigation into illegal use of golden visas,” reports Público on 14 November.

The officers arrested eleven people suspected of taking bribes in exchange for granting the special Schengen area resident cards the Portuguese government issues to foreign investors who meet certain conditions.

Público reports “police have already carried out 60 searches and seized 100 documents in the ministries of justice, the interior and the environment,” and that several high-ranking civil servants could be subject to criminal investigation.
