‘Farage faces jail threat over £200,000 donations’

Eurosceptic Ukip party leader and MEP Nigel Farage could face a year in jail for failing to declare £200,000 (about 250,000 euros) in donations over a period of 14 years, reports The Times. A watchdog’s judgement that Farage broke electoral law by failing to declare he had received a constituency office rent-free since 2001 “also raises fresh questions over how the MEP used EU funds intended to pay for the office,” the paper writes —

Mr Farage claimed to have spent an average of £15,500 a year of EU money on “office management and running costs”, which solely covers rent, utilities, business rates and insurance and cleaning for the small former grain store. […] As Mr Farage has received the office rent-free since 2001, his total spending on the management costs […] could reach almost £200,000.
