José Manuel “Barroso said his record was ‘good’ after ten years in office, during which the EU has been reinforced,” writes Público, quoting the outgoing European Commission president’s valedictory speech in the European Parliament on 21 October, at the end of his two five-year mandates.
Barroso said the European Union, which grew from 15 to 28 members during his office, had to “face an unprecedented crisis, without the tools to fight it”, but that it came out “reinforced, with powers that were unthinkable before the crisis”.

not everybody agreed. He was criticised for not mentioning unemployment, for the rising of euroscepticism and for the lack of trust of citizens in the European project.
