One year after Covid-19 arrived on the continent, the vaccination campaign was finally launched in Europe. Although the European Commission ordered hundreds of millions of doses from pharmaceutical companies on behalf of the EU-27, each Member State is responsible for organising national vaccination campaigns. Delays have often been severe, due to priority criteria, software issues or logistical problems.
As a result, differences in vaccination rates have varied significantly from country to country. And while several governments, such as France and Germany, are adopting new restrictions to deal with an upsurge in infections, the European Commission is considering a "vaccination passport" allowing holders to circulate freely within the Union. However, the legality of this plan is in question.
