Conservative Party leader, Erna Solberg, will shortly become Norwegian prime minister.
Her party came in second place in the September 9 general elections with 26.8 per cent of the vote, behind outgoing prime minister Jens Stoltenberg’s Labour Party (30.8 per cent). However, it will benefit from a majority with the support of several right-wing parties, including the anti-immigration Progress Party.
After “a night of applause for Erna,” Aftenposten remarks that the new prime minister will face “a battle for power,” in her bid to overcome differences between conservatives, liberals and populists, which could make it difficult to form a government. The newspaper adds that —
It will be an enormous political failure if these parties do not succeed in building a functional coalition government.
