The UK, France and US have called for the UN to “urgently investigate” Syrian rebel opposition claims a government chemical weapons strike near the capital Damascus killed hundreds of civilians, writes The Times.
Harrowing videos uploaded by activists in Syria showed dozens of men, women and children lying unresponsive on the ground following the alleged gas attack in the Ghouta district at dawn on August 21.
At an emergency UN Security Council meeting, 35 member states demanded UN weapons inspectors already in Syria immediately visit the scene to confirm whether chemical weapons were used. If confirmed, this would mark a “serious escalation” in hostilities, UN officials said.
