A Labour senator and resident of The Hague’s working-class Schilderswijk district, Adri Duivesteijn, has deplored the stigmatisation of his neighbourhood, in the wake of a Trouw investigative feature, which reports that the area has become a hotbed of Salafism.
In an interview with the newspaper, Duivesteijn responds to concerns about the special rules – such as bans on smoking and girls wearing short skirts – that radical Muslims have imposed in some of the neighbourhood’s streets.
The Dutch have yet to reach a stage where they recognise that society has fundamentally changed. We have not yet accepted that society is coloured. When you have a dominant culture in a certain area, it naturally develops its own customs.
