At least 50,000 people are threatened with eviction after falling behind in rent payments as a result of the “bedroom tax” – a change in the law which means that people living in state-provided housing who have a spare room, can have their benefits cut by up to 25 per cent.

Around one tenant in three who lives in state-provided housing has been driven into rent arrears since the law change in April, according to figures seen by The Independent.
