Coal-fired UK power stations are to be allowed to apply for government subsidies as senior government officials become increasingly concerned at the possibility of future electricity blackouts in the country, writes The Independent.
Such power plants will now be able to bid to receive “capacity payments”, which are funded from contributions included every consumer’s electricity bill, and would allow coal-fired power stations to upgrade their facilities
However, the daily notes, if they were awarded the grants –

the money would help make coal generation economic well into the 2020s – but significantly reduce the UK’s ability to cut its carbon emissions.
