The second round of municipal elections on December 1 amounted to an “earthquake in Kosovo”, writes Koha Ditore.
According to initial results, the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) topped the poll in nine municipalities, while the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) won only five. The LDK now controls nine of the country’s 39 municipalities. The PDK has 10.
The LDK lost its stronghold, the capital Pristina, which was won by Shpend Ahmeti of the Albanian nationalist Self-Determination movement. The newspaper adds —
… in most municipalities, voters punished the local authorities, and severely punished the PDK, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and Isa Mustafa. The reversal of voting trends has redrawn the map of municipalities in Kosovo.
