The European Commission announced on August 20 that it will accept Spanish government demands to investigate whether Gibraltan officials’ sinking of concrete blocks in disputed coastal waters was legal, as well as alleged money laundering and smuggling in the British colony, reports ABC.
“At last, the EU takes up Gibraltar”, notes ABC in its editorial, adding that the EU
is for finding a solution to satisfy London and Madrid, taking into account that both governments share much more important interests. [...]The Commission’s role in the Gibraltar issue has limited scope, because the EU does not have the necessary authority to address the principal issue of sovereignty, but it has authority over taxation and the environment.
