"Fatal earthquake in Lorca," headlines El Periódico in its report on the 5.2 Richter scale quake which struck the town, home to 90,000 people, in the southern region of Murcia. According to the daily, it is the "worst Spanish earthquake tragedy since 1956" when 15 people died in the Grenada region. As it stands, eight people have died, 160 have been injured, and another 10,000 to 20,000 spent the night outside amid fears of aftershocks. The Barcelona daily also carries a front-page article on the economic adjustment package announced on 12 May, 2010, by José Luis Zapatero’s government, asking “Was it worth it?” one year on. The newspaper remarks "that although they have acted as a brake on growth, Zapatero’s cuts have reduced the threat of European intervention to control the deficit" and protected Spain from contagion to the point where "even the anglophone press, which has been so eager to berate the country, has eased off the pressure."
