At a meeting held on June 17, the leaders of parties in the ruling coalition — socialist Evangelos Venizelos (PASOK), Fotis Kouvelis of the Democratic Left (DIMAR), and conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras (New Democracy) — failed to reach agreement on the fate of public broadcaster ERT, which was summarily closed down on June 11.
On the same day, Greece’s highest administrative court, the Council of State partially acknowledge the validity of an appeal against the closure filed by ERT employees, when it ordered a “temporary” reopening of the broadcaster, which is to provide a minimum service until a new public media entity, NERIT, can be established. The Council of State will issue its definitive ruling on the matter in December, however, it is worth noting that the court has also found that the government had the right to close the broadcaster.
The leaders of the three-party coalition, who disagree on how to interpret the court’s decision, have arranged to hold a further meeting on June 19, reports I Kathimerini.
