The Chamber of Deputies, parliament’s lower chamber, dissolved itself on August 20 by majority of 140 votes out of 200, clearing the way for general elections in two months.
These should put an end to the political crisis following the fall of Petr Nečas government, the failure of Jiří Rusnok administration to win a vote of confidence and President Miloš Zeman’s attempts to challenge constitutional conventions.
The president is expected to accept parliament’s dissolution and call the elections for October 25 and 26. Lidové noviny warns that after these elections, “the Czech political landscape will shift to the left and will turn red.” Some analysts predict the Social Democrats and Communists could win up to three-fifths of parliamentary seats – enough to rewrite the constitution.
