A bus that plunged down a mountainside killing 38 people near Avellino, in southern Italy was out of control and began to fall apart before it crashed through a safety barrier and topped over the edge, according to investigators.
The government has declared July 30 a day of national mourning in memory of the victims, who included school children and their families returning from a trip to Naples.
Inquiries into the cause of the incident are ongoing, although La Stampa condemns a “country without maintenance [regulations]”, pointing out that the bus had been in service since 1995. The daily adds that it is crucial to understand what happened “to fairly apportion blame and stop this kind of incident happening again.”
