For over a year, a group of hackers from Eastern Europe called Dragonfly have spied on energy companies in the US, Europe and Poland, writes Rzeczpospolita quoting a report by security firm Symantec. Among Dragonfly’s targets were energy grids and pipeline operators, electricity generating firms and manufacturers of energy equipment.
Most attacks were carried out in Spain and the US, but also in France, Italy and Germany. According to Symantec, a high degree of technical skill displayed by the hackers from Dragonfly “bears the hallmarks of a state-sponsored operation” whose main objective was cyberespionage, with sabotage as a possible second option.
