Czech farmers have discovered they are to lose €300m in farm subsidies as a result of cuts in agriculture spending in the new 2014-2020 European budget.
The cuts in the Rural Development Fund budget were made with the approval of
Prime minister Petr Nečas and in order to boost resources for the Cohesion Fund. However, Nečas failed to inform his government or parliament of the cuts.
As a result, the UK business daily the Financial Times listed Nečas as one of the major losers in the February budget summit. Farmers are now writing to the Agriculture ministry to protest the decision.
