Orban walks away with the loot

Viktor Orbán: “I don’t need you for this!”

On 3 March, Fidesz, the nationalist party of Hungary’s Prime minister Viktor Orbán, announced his delegation’s departure from the conservative European People’s Party (EPP). Earlier that day, the same EPP group passed – with an 84% majority –  an amendment of its rules of procedure that would allow the suspension of the entire delegation’s membership.

The decision is a new step in the power struggle between Orbán and his political family in the EU and the European Commission, due in particular to Hungary’s increasing violations of the rule of law as well as accusations of embezzlement of EU funds. Already suspended from the EPP for two years, Fidesz could be excluded at the next party meeting.
