“We’re beginning the dialogue, pass it on”
The European Union is calling for calm on the issue of rule of law in Poland. At the October 21 and 22 European summit European leaders once again expressed their concerns over the situation, while still refusing to impose any sanctions.
Warsaw and Brussels have been at odds for several years over specific judicial reforms supported by the ruling conservative Law and Justice party (PiS). The EU argues that these reforms impinge on democratic freedoms, while Poland's populists believe they are a necessary step in rooting out judicial corruption. A recent decision by the Polish Constitutional Court declaring certain articles of the EU treaties incompatible with the Polish constitution has increased tensions, raising the spectre of a "Polexit”.
Brussels is open to discussion, while reserving the right to take legal and financial measures if negotiations fail. This was not well received by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
