Shortly after 11pm on May 7, the Jolly Nero container ship was leaving Genoa port when it crashed into the control tower, causing the structure to collapse onto another building.

The bodies of four people, including two coastguards and a port pilot, have already been recovered from the wreckage and at least 6 others are still missing. The city mayor Marco Doria has declared a day of mourning.

The cause of the accident is still unknown, but some analysts suggest the 40,000-tonne ship’s engines may have stalled, rendering it uncontrollable.
