A gentler end to the year

Published on 23 December 2011 at 10:28

If 2010 was an ordeal for Europe, 2011 has been worse, to the point where the simple fact that the euro has survived appears to be good news. Not only has the risk of Greek default persisted, but the debt crisis is now threatening the largest countries in the Eurozone. And the contagion, with its attendant cortege of bailout and austerity plans, has brought down several governments, while pessimism about the meaning of the European project has descended on the EU.

Week after week, Presseurop has chronicled the crisis whose twists and turns are detailed in the articles in our various briefings, which offer an opportunity to take a step back and view the many factors that have shaped this story. No doubt the coming year will be equally rich in developments with far reaching implications for our future, which Presseurop will continue to document with its selection of the best and most original articles from the international press.

But for now, in a week when many of us are hoping to take a break from the crisis in the company of family and friends, we have decided to publish five articles with a fresh perspective on the world: interviews with Andrzej Stasiuk and writer George Steiner, accounts of two struggles — one against a dictatorship and the other against the mafia — and a reflection on a theme which is close to the heart of Presseurop: how communication is shaped by languages and translation.

Happy reading and best wishes for the holiday season.
